Pinus pumila

Pinus pumila, also called dwarf Siberian pine, grows in the colder regions of Asia, mainly in eastern Siberia, Mongolia, northern China, Korea and Japan. Unlike the tall pine trees we’re used to seeing, this species stays fairly low to the ground. It grows more like a dense bush, often spreading across mountain slopes. This helps it survive freezing winters, strong winds and heavy snow.

People living in these regions have been collecting Pumila pine nuts for generations. The seeds were traditionally eaten as food, although gathering them can be hard work. Many of the trees grow in remote mountain areas, where getting to them isn’t always straightforward.

Pumila kernels are quite small, especially when compared to Pinus sibirica and Pinus koraiensis. They’re usually compact, light cream in colour and have a mild, nutty flavour. Because of their size, they work well in products where pine nuts are mixed with other ingredients rather than used whole.

Pumila pine nuts aren’t as well known in Europe as the Siberian or Korean varieties, but they’re another option for food manufacturers who need smaller kernels.

At Bio Group, we supply Pinus pumila 2000 pine nut kernels to food manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors across Europe. We source them from Mongolia and China, depending on availability.
