Pine Nut Kernels for European Buyers

About Pine Nuts

Pine nuts have been eaten for thousands of years and are still widely used in cooking today. They come from certain types of pine trees found in Europe, Asia and North America. Although we call them nuts, they’re actually seeds that grow inside pine cones. After harvesting, the hard shells are removed to get the edible kernels.

There are quite a few differences between pine nut varieties. Some are small and round, others are longer and larger. The flavour, colour and texture also change depending on the species and where the trees grow.

Pine nuts are probably best known as an ingredient in pesto, but their use goes well beyond that. They’re common in Mediterranean and Asian cooking and are used in sauces, baked goods, confectionery and other prepared foods.

At Bio Group, we work with four varieties: Pinus sibirica, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus pumila and Pinus yunnanensis. We supply these pine nut kernels to food manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors throughout Europe. Each variety is a little different, and the choice often comes down to what the customer is producing.
